Mashco-Piro Clan

I found this last night.  I actually didn’t know that such tribes still existed.  And I was surprised by my first impression – which was to romanticize colonization.  How typical of me.  Is it stupid to say that movies like Tarzan and Avatar came to mind?

I am so, so curious as to how this clan will fare in today’s world.  It will take a long time for them to get used to us, no?

Like so many stories in history, there is always something precious that gets lost when two such extreme cultures come together…the threat of change and potential loss of culture.  That classic and historically tragic friction between what some see as the “civilized” and the “savages”.  What a terrible word.  But they weren’t approached, they chose to approach.  How fascinating.

Will they care for what we have to offer?  Or will they have so much more to teach us in return?
